English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at SCSE  is a course designed to build outstanding English language skills like listening, speaking, reading, writing along with a higher level of understanding of grammar and vocabulary. The students learn and develop their English proficiency in the academic field by practicing  through  debates, group discussions,  essay writing, report writing, review writing, case studies and enaging in reflections on the documentaries, videos, reports, articles etc.

Course Overview

  • The course is for adult learners from diverese academic backgrounds who wish to go for higher education particulary tertiary or vocational education further.
  • This course teaches a range of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and makes the students practice the core skills from the academic approch . This will help them to go for higher studies in particular and fit in the community and at their working places in general.
  • The students are dignosed with their proficiency level in English by taking a placement test and placed in the suitable English level classroom.
  • The students are given progress tests, writing assignments etc to track their language learning progress and passing that eventually promotes them to the upper level The regular classroom assignments include formative assessments.

Skills practiced in the classroom

Listening: Students will listen to English audios from diverese fields like science, technology, law etc. They must focus their attention on the vocabulary, process, problem, solution by obesrving reports, documentaries, podcasts, talk shows, debates, short films etc.

Speaking: Students will have the daily opportunity to practice speaking for a range of academic topics and learn the art of debating and showing their point of view on different academic topics.

Reading: Students will be reading a variety of modified texts, including case studies, essays, reports, debates, journal articles, reviews etc.  They  will learn various strategies to help them comprehend and analyse the texts by focusing on the structures.

Writing: Students will be writing different types of essays, reports, reviews, case studies to practice their analytical and critical thinking along with the English proficiency. Students will be able to use basic and effective technological tools to present their ideas.

Levels of English

EAP-I

This course introduces more advanced grammatical knowledge and seeks to increase personal vocabulary and to encourage autonomous learning. It prepares the learners for an advance social immersion as well as higher academic goals keeping the cosmopolitan approach in mind.

By the end of this course, The students will be able to socialise more effectively with other English speakers at both the verbal and written level along with understanding international English accents and vocabulary . They  will be able to present their  ideas more cohesively and coherently, be it an oral or written communication.

EAP-II

This course builds on the skills learned at EAP-I. You will learn more complex conversation patterns involving paralinguistic and non-verbal features. Achieving a higher level of competence in terms of academic writing and presentations is targetting at this level.

By the end of this course, the students will be able to immerse in the environment with a global approach. They will be able to debate and write comprehensively about the global issues with an open mind and inclusive approach.
