General English (GE)
General English (GE) at SCSE is a course designed to build and enhance the core English language skills like listening, speaking, reading, writing along with an understanding of grammar and vocabulary. The students learn and develop their English proficiency by engaging and actively participating in interactive activities and language games which can help them in building their confidence apart from the ability to freely and enthusiastically communicate in everyday life situtions.
Course Overview
- This course is for adult learners from diverese language backgrounds who have limited exposure to English conversations.
- This course grounds them with basic vocabulary, simple verb tenses, common phrases, conventional learning techniques, pronunciation tips, the phonetic and English alphabets and introduces them to language coincidences. This approach can assist them toengage in conversations with the Australian community as well as speed up their progress for further study and finding better jobs down the line.
- Before commencing, students’ English proficiency is diagnosed through a placement test in all the macro skills, vocabulary and grammar on the commencement of the course. Further English language learning progress is ensured and tracked by progress tests every week.
- The classroom activities in GE English language course include watching videos, listening to the audios, playing language games and other interactive activities like role plays, word charades etc along with the structured learning of the course module prescribed in the textbook of the respective level
Skills practiced in the classroom
Listening: Students will listen to English from native speakers via their teacher and other media. They will also listen to English spoken by their peers. They must focus their attention on the speaker’s message in order to comprehend and produce a meaningful response.
Speaking: Students will have the daily opportunity to practice speaking in structured conversations with their peers as well as producing several projects and learning tasks. They will do a practical by presenting the information to the class using newly acquired English skills.
Reading: Students will be reading a variety of modified texts, including dialogues, short stories, poetry, and expository writing, with guidance and support from their teacher and peers. Theywill learn various strategies to help them comprehend a text in their target language. They will also learn necessary analytical skills to interpret both literature and images.
Writing: Students will be writing on a daily basis, practicing the grammar structures and the new vocabulary. They will write a variety of personal narratives, descriptions, reports, poems, and reflections based on the literature. They will also have the opportunity to create their own works of creative fiction in response to various texts.
Levels of English
Elementary | The students will learn basic vocabulary, simple verb tenses, common phrases, conversational techniques, pronunciation tips, the phonetic and English alphabets and the coincidences of the new language. |
Pre-Intermediate | This course builds on the skills learned at the Elementary level. The students will learn modals and conditionals, more complex tenses including simple past, future, and present perfect. They will also learn how to agree / disagree and express their opinions in conversation and written documents. In addition they will learn how to tell a good story, further pronunciation skills and confidence in the new language. |
Intermediate | This course is an extension of Pre-Intermediate. It concentrates on joining tenses, more formal structures including all the conditionals and the passive voice, as well as extending their knowledge of idioms, phrasal of verbs, and colloquialisms. By the end of the Intermediate course, the students will be better equipped to converse in a relaxed manner. |
Upper-Intermediate | This course introduces more advanced grammatical knowledge and seeks to increase personal vocabulary and to encourage autonomous learning. The pronunciation syllabus employed increases accuracy and confidence. By the end of this course, they will be able to socialise more effectively with other English speakers at both the verbal and written level. |
